Kyla’s works are precision formed to the extent that they often appear to have been made by machine. Fascinated by geometry, light and colour, she likes to surprise people by creating structures that appear to change based on the viewers perspective and view point. ‘Refraction' aimed to take the viewer on a playful geometric journey, emerging from the space with a smile.

‘Refraction' is an immersive installation by Kyla McCallum, made using over 200 folded paper panels. Displayed at Thurloe Place, the space included an incredible 52,000 hand folded lines. Visitors were encouraged to view the space through kaleidoscopes, discovering new shapes and combinations of geometric lines, shapes and shadows. Layer upon layer of origami grew up the walls and slinked across the ceiling, creating an array of detailed patterns.

Kyla runs a design studio called Foldability, creating installations, set design and products inspired by origami and geometry. Each project is unique and primarily hand crafted in her London based studio. Kyla graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2012 and founded Foldability in 2013. Since then she has worked in collaboration with a range of brands including ELLE Decoration, Ted Baker, John Lewis, H&M and Perrier Jouët.
