Ashley Sheekey is an artist making work that explores her interest in the built environment. She is especially intrigued by the overlap between public and private space, and the presence of generous and hostile design. The body of ceramic works she has developed reference the small, idiosyncratic details that she notices while walking around Brighton & Hove, where she lives. Taking particular inspiration from paint-laden ironwork railings and decorative street furniture, the works document a particular moment or place of interest. The resulting pieces are often generously decorated, painted and trailed with slips to create texture and enhance details under glazes, exaggerating the thrown silhouettes.
