In Loving Memory of Chloe Grimshaw

Plinth's co-founder Chloe Grimshaw, beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend passed away on the 16th May 2026.

Creativity was woven through Chloe's life, but warmth, wisdom and generosity were at its heart. Softly spoken and thoughtful, she had an instinctive belief in the value of people and a sincere desire to be helpful. She listened carefully, encouraged others and brought kindness, intelligence and care to everything she did.

Art, design and culture were part of Chloe from the beginning. Growing up in a family where these interests were an everyday presence, she developed a lifelong fascination with art, architecture, books and ideas. Travelling with her father, including on a lecture tour of Japan and to Seville during Expo ’92, introduced her to different ways of seeing the world – experiences that would shape her outlook for years to come. She studied Fine Art and Art History at Goldsmiths College before becoming an arts public relations consultant, curator and writer. Her books, including New Country Style, New London Style and Ibiza Style were published by Thames & Hudson and Merrell, while her journalism appeared in publications including The Independent, The Telegraph Magazine, The Observer Magazine, The Guardian Weekend and Elle Decor.

Chloe's greatest happiness, though, was found in the people she loved. In 2007 she married her beloved husband, Paul Franklyn, and in 2009 they welcomed their daughter, Ella, the centre of their world. Their dog, Sunny, the noisiest member of the family, brought Chloe great comfort when she wasn't well – although Paul was generally the one up early to walk him, as Chloe was never a fan of early mornings.

She adored her younger sister, Isabel, and shared a passion for tennis – both playing and watching – with her dear mother, Lavinia. She treasured family adventures, especially cycling holidays on Île de Ré, exploring Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in Chicago and mid-century furniture sourcing in Buenos Aires. Whether on a tennis court, riding a bicycle, discovering a new restaurant or holiday destination, or singing along to unapologetically cheesy pop music with old friends, Chloe approached life with enthusiasm and delight.

In later years, Chloe found particular meaning in helping others. Through Plinth, the contemporary arts consultancy she co-founded with Paul in 2015, she worked closely with artists and creative practitioners, bringing people, projects and opportunities together. But it was her work with the Grimshaw Foundation that held a special place in her heart. Since 2021, as both a Trustee and Creative Director of the Foundation, she helped shape its vision and grow its educational network, encouraging young people around the world to explore design, architecture and the possibilities of creative thinking. It was work that brought together many of the things she valued most – learning, human connection, opportunity and purpose – and reflected the generosity, curiosity and sense of possibility that characterised her throughout her life.

In Chloe’s memory, Plinth is fundraising for the UCLH Charity Cancer Fund. During her illness, Chloe and her family were supported with extraordinary kindness and care by the wonderful staff at University College Hospital, and this fund will help them continue their vital work supporting patients and their families.
