The Fourth Plinth Commissioning Team have collaborated with Plinth to make a range of merchandise consisting of six products - a porcelain mug, scarf, t-shirt, embroidered patch, enamel badge and a tote bag - produced alongside a limited edition statuette of the commission itself made in collaboration with Tiger.
The new Fourth Plinth commission, ‘Really Good’ by David Shrigley, was unveiled on 29th September 2016. Best known for his humorous and satirical drawings, Shrigley also works with sculpture, photography, animation and books. His work is exhibited all over the world and appears in numerous prestigious art publications and he has created animated music videos for Blur and Bonnie Prince Billy.
‘Really Good’ sees a seven-metre-high hand giving a thumbs up. Cast in bronze, with the same dark patina as other statues in Trafalgar Square, the thumb is disproportionately long. Shrigley’s ambition is that this simple gesture will become a self-fulfilling prophecy; that things considered ‘bad’ such as the economy, elements of society and perhaps even the weather, will benefit from a change of consensus towards positivity.
The Fourth Plinth commission is the UK’s most celebrated and best-loved award for contemporary art. It has become a true London icon, funded by the Mayor of London and supported by Arts Council England. Sadiq Khan says “the positivity and humour evident in David Shrigley’s commission ‘Really Good’ truly encapsulates the spirit of London. The changing artworks on Fourth Plinth continue to be a source of delight, discussion and debate and I am proud to be the Mayor of a city that has such an energetic and vibrant cultural life.”
