Velorose x Plinth
17 October until 20 December 2019

Private View: Thursday 17th October, 6-9pm

55 years on from Warhol‘s American Supermarket, and inspired by Duchamp‘s assertion that art is a commodity (and that a commodity can be art), Velorose and Plinth have teamed up to co-curate an exhibition of multiples and individual works, Shop Art!

Pitched somewhere between a gallery and your essential corner shop – Velorose is firmly established as part of the neighbourhood – with local artists, ad agencies, architects and designers popping in to chat, admire the neon and to contemplate their latest purchase.

"I shop therefore I am."

To celebrate the Fourth Plinth commission of David Shrigley's 'Really Good’ in 2016, The Mayor’s Culture team collaborated with Plinth to make a range of merchandise - including this 'Really Good' Football Scarf

Against a musical backdrop (The Pet Shop Boys’ PopArt), immerse yourself in this A/W 2019 collection, browse and acquire. Unexpected juxtapositions and the surprisingly familiar present themselves in this fascinating investigation of a taboo of the art world (Art = Money), and - naturally - all artworks are for sale.

"If shopping is the answer, what was the question?"

Michael Craig-Martin, 'Violin Plates (pink)', 2016. Bone china, made and hand decorated with ceramic transfers in Stoke on Trent.

No need to panic buy, when you can explore Velorose’ Bargain Basement, special offers and limited editions – for a limited time only. Violin plates (pink) by Michael Craig-Martin, hang next to English Breakfast by Martin Parr and Tescue value tomato soup from Banksy (so much tastier than Warhols’ Campbell's Soup Cans). Or pop into to discover our ‘Twenty under Twenty’ with badges, scarves, magnets and ceramics at bargain prices, from Gavin Turk, Yinka Shonibare, David Shrigley and Bella Freud.

“It’s no surprise to find humour in photographs, taken the crazy place we all live in”.

Don’t miss out on an ever-changing selection of artworks by Julian Opie, Cornelia Parker, Fiona Banner, Gillian Wearing, Yoshitomo Nara and others. Why Exit Through the Gift Shop when Velorose and Plinth are exhibiting in a gift shop, and you can shop in an exhibition?

During the course of this exhibition, we'll be hosting a book launch, flash sales, special ticketed events and workshops. We'll be stocking specially-made and functional artworks, by artists, architects and designers. Special events to be announced soon, include a Thanksgiving workshop with Daisy de Villeneuve and a Christmas wreath-making workshop using only flowers, herbs and foliage grown within London, with F.bombe.

Velorose is where art meets gift shop, in a purpose-built fit-out combining an architecture and design studio and art gallery.
