The perfectly round Central Library in Manchester has always been one of my all-time favourite buildings and it’s now framed by newly-planted trees with bright purple flowers.

These are fast-growing, early flowering trees from China called Paulownias (also known as the Princess or Empress tree). It’s part of a redesign to transform St. Peter’s Square into a new public space, by German landscape architects Latz + Partner.

Totemic red sculptures ‘Terminal’ and Untitled’ - key sculptures from the 1960s and 1970s by the German-born British sculptor and designer, Bernard Schottlander - point the way to the newly refurbished Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.

A walk through Whitworth Park is rewarded with sculpture from Simon Periton The Outsider/The Insider, Christine Borland’s Hippocratic Tree and Nate Lowman’s Snowman.  We couldn’t resist trying out the playground too…
