Beatriz Milhazes

Beatriz Milhazes graduated in Social Communication. She studied Arts at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (EAV – School of Visual Arts) from 1980 to 1983, where she also taught Painting until 1996.

Beatriz Milhazes is well known for her vibrantly colorful, kaleidoscopic collages, prints, paintings and installations which draw on both Latin American and European traditions. Milhazes’ rigorously structured compositions are punctuated by a recurring set of arabesque motifs inspired by Brazilian culture, ceramics, lacework, carnival decoration, music, and Colonial baroque architecture.

Installation

Milhazes is considered one of the leading Brazilian artists. She consolidated her career in the national and international arts circuit, participating in the Venice Biennial (2003), São Paulo Biennial (1998 and 2004) and Shanghai Biennial (2006). With solo shows in museums and prestigious institutions such as: Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, São Paulo (2008); Fondation Cartier, Paris (2009); Fondation Beyeler, Basel (2011); and most recently at: Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon; Museo de Arte Latinoamericano (MALBA), Buenos Aires (2012); Paço Imperial/MinC IPHAN, Rio de Janeiro (2013); and Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), Miami (2014/2015).

Sculpture

Her work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York; 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, in Japan; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, in Madrid, among others.
The artist lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.
